A Unified Voice in Uncertain Times: The Value of NGAUT Membership
Updated: Oct 21
By COL Cody Workman, President
Fellow Officers and Guard Members,
As we navigate an increasingly complex global landscape, the role of the National Guard has never been more critical. We are operating in a volatile geopolitical climate that demands high readiness and rapid response. Concurrently, our formations face increased mission requirements at both the state and federal levels, often while navigating the difficult reality of increasingly constrained resources. Now, more than ever, we are asked to execute complex missions, balancing our civilian careers, our families, and our unwavering commitment to national security.
In this challenging operating environment, the importance of membership in our professional organizations—the National Guard Association of Utah (NGAUT) and the National Guard Association of the United States (NGAUS)—cannot be overstated.
Advocating for the Guard's Unique Needs
The National Guard operates under a unique dual-status framework, bringing distinct challenges that are not always fully understood by those outside our ranks. NGAUT and NGAUS serve as our dedicated, unified voice in the legislative priorities and processes that dictate our future. When policy decisions are being made regarding equipment modernization, healthcare, force structure, and personnel benefits, these associations ensure that the specific needs of Guard members and their families are front and center.
Without this representation, we risk being overlooked in broader defense appropriations and policy adjustments. Our professional associations ensure that decision-makers understand the true cost of our readiness and the specific support required to sustain it.
Strength in Numbers
Legislative priorities are driven by persistent, unified advocacy. NGAUT works tirelessly at the state level here in Utah, while NGAUS champions our cause on Capitol Hill. Their success, however, is directly tied to the strength of our membership. When our associations speak to legislators, the weight of their words is amplified by the sheer number of officers they represent. Every active member reinforces our mandate to secure the resources, benefits, and support structures necessary to maintain a lethal, ready, and resilient force.
A Call to Action
Membership is not just a professional formality; it is a direct investment in your career, your Soldiers and Airmen, and your families. The benefits secured today—from improved TRICARE Reserve Select access to critical equipment fielding—are the direct result of past advocacy. We must continue this legacy to protect our future.
I urge each of you to maintain your active membership and to actively encourage your peers to join our ranks. Together, through NGAUT and NGAUS, we will ensure that the Utah National Guard remains equipped, supported, and ready to meet whatever challenges the future holds.
Honored to serve with you,
Cody
